While Ezuri gains experience counters from Morphs and Ixidor directly supports face-down creatures, Animar is the closest comparison we can make to how Kadena should be evaluated in the format. (This is very important for cards like Ghastly Conscription, since Kadena will draw cards for each of the face-down creatures!) Morph as a theme certainly has a niche following, as there are 465 Morph decks in the EDHREC database, with Animar, Soul of Elements, Ixidor, Reality Sculptor, and Ezuri, Claw of Progress as the three main commanders. In addition, she provides card advantage by drawing a card every time a face-down creature enters the battlefield under your control, which notably counts for both Morph and Manifest cards. Barring any effects that increase costs, Kadena reduces the first Morph you cast each turn by three mana, making it free to play. Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer is the face card of the Sultai Morph deck. I'm excited to talk about them with you! Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer We have a Morph commander, a Voltron commander, and a counter-based commander, all of which seem to be really interesting and exciting to build! While we have only received two new Morph cards, we also received several new non-commander cards that can fit into a variety of decks. This time around, we've received three new Sultai commanders that all seem to have fairly niche roles and themes while still maintaining some versatility. Sultai has received many new toys and a few new commanders to play with over the last couple of years, including Muldrotha the Gravetide and Yarok, the Desecrated, both of which have become popular as extremely versatile commanders that can cater to several playstyles. This may not be Star Wars, and you may not find Jar Jar Binks or Darth Maul in this set review, but with a color combination like Sultai and a theme like Morph, we have plenty of Phantom Menaces to discuss in the Sultai set review of Commander 2019! Keep in mind that the effect that allows a player to spare their commander from death is a replacement effect.( Kadena, Slinking Sorcerer | Art by Caio Monteiro) EPISODE 1: THE FACELESS MENACE If Rayami’s effect doesn’t exile the creature, it won’t have a blood counter on it, even if another effect exiles it. If multiple replacement effects try to change where a dying creature would go, the controller of the creature chooses one to apply. Nontoken creatures that would die at the same time that Rayami leaves the battlefield are exiled with blood counters. Rayami won’t gain that ability from that card. If an exiled creature card has one of the listed keywords only if certain conditions are met, the ability granting that keyword doesn’t apply while the card is in exile. If an exiled creature card has one or more variants of the listed keywords (for example, protection from black or hexproof from white), Rayami gains those specific variants. If a nontoken creature that isn’t normally a creature (such as a Vehicle) would die, Rayami exiles it with a blood counter on it, although Rayami won’t gain any of its abilities. It even looks at those exiled by an ability of another player’s Rayami, First of the Fallen. Rayami looks at all exiled creature cards with blood counters, not only those exiled with its ability.
